“For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Colossians 1:13
As I was reading through Colossians, this verse made me stop dead in my tracks. I’d had this verse underlined from a previous journey through the book of Colossians; however, I don’t think it hit me then, with a pencil in my hand underlining verse 13, just how profound this verse really is. If we’re honest with ourselves, this verse is everything: it is the ultimate game-changer.
He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.
We, the chosen and beloved daughters of the one true King, have been rescued from the darkness all around us — and perhaps more realistically, we have been rescued from the darkness that is inherently within us.
Jesus took our mess, our foolishness, our heartbreak and made it beautiful. He placed his mantle of grace upon every inch of our hearts — the good, the bad and the ugly. There is no part of our broken heart, our mess or our mistakes that God does not see and does not cover with the blood of the Son whom He loves. He picks us up out of our darkness, dusts us off, and with a smile He reaches for our dirty hand, His bearing holes from the infamous nails which held Him to the cross, and He walks us into is Kingdom of light.
Friends, what could be much better than that?
I inherited this free gift of grace when I accepted Jesus as my Savior, just as you might have if you’ve made the same choice. For me, that magnificent moment of acceptance occurred when I got to college just two short years ago. I’m entering my third year as a college student, and I am STILL unpacking the gift of grace, piece by intricate piece, day by God-given day. And friends, I will continue to do so every day for the rest of my life, as will you.
I hope you’ll take some time to sit down with this verse, and others like it, and just bask in the glory of the free gift of grace we have been given.
You are forgiven. You are redeemed. Our Heavenly Father moved heaven and earth just to get to you. I pray that any time you think of this sweet, amazing grace, your heart will beat just a little faster and your eyes will turn to heaven with a smile on your face because you will know just how loved you are.
May we never stop being jaw-droppingly in awe of the love and grace our Savior has for us. He took our darkness and gave us light. He opened his arms to our frail, orphaned hearts and adopted us into his kingdom of grace. He traded our shame for redemption-- His life, for ours. Friends, I hope you begin to understand just how much the God of the Universe passionately and relentlessly loves you; my prayer is that the revelation of such a love will never dull in your hearts.
